5 Simple Steps to Start Your Virtual Assistant Journey

If you’re looking to get started as a Virtual Assistant, but the whole process feels overwhelming to you, don’t worry, it’s not as big as you’re making it out to be right now.

While there are a lot of steps, the best thing to do is to look at them exactly like that. Just small steps, that all add up to the bigger picture.

To give you an idea of how to switch your mindframe round to being ready to get started as a Virtual Assistant, here are 5 simple steps you can take today to get you started as a VA, and could potentially get you your first client.

1.Work out your ‘why’

Knowing your why will help to keep you motivated, it will help you find clarity in life. It infuses you with passion for your goals and allows you to remain focused. It allows you to become more resilient as you can see the bigger picture and are able to bounce back easier after setbacks, and it allows you to live a more satisfied life.

So get yourself crystal clear on your why.

What are your passions in life? What legacy do you want to leave? What gifts or talents do you have that can inspire others. What makes you feel inspired? What do you want your life to look like?

Do you want to be earning a certain amount of money in 12 months time? Do you want to be completely location independent… when that’s allowed that is! Do you want to have a successful business?

Spend some time thinking about this, and write it down somewhere you will see it everyday.

If things ever get tough, you should always go back to your why and remind yourself of the reasons you’re doing this for.

2. Breakdown goals

Now you’ve got your why, you should start setting yourself goals.

Think about what you want to achieve in the next 12 months, then begin to work this backwards. 

For example, in 12 months time, you might want to grow a team within your business. Working this backwards, at what point do you want to be fully booked before you hire a team? What other processes will you need to go through to get to that point? By when do you want to take on your first client? You might have other streams of income for your business, such as blogging, so how many blog posts will you need to have written before you’re generating a good amount of traffic to your page? How will you market your blog, what do you need to learn by what date?

Take some time now to map out your year as much as you can. Obviously, this might change slightly over the year  but at least go through 12 month goals, 9 month goals, 6 month goals, 3 months goals, 2 month goals, and 1 month goals. Then tell someone about your goals. Having these written down, and making them known to someone else will help hold you accountable!

3. Think about what Virtual Assisant services you want to offer 

I know this can be a bit tricky for people at this stage, because it is scary, and it is overwhelming! Especially if you’ve looked at massive lists of skills, and some of them might not even make sense right now.

Do not worry!

Start thinking about skills you currently have, and any that are of interest that you could do some further courses online for. This should help you to start making a list of potential services you can offer.

As you’re building your business, you will learn so many skills along the way, that these can all become part of your services.

4. Working out your niche, and if you even need to niche!

Your niche will be the who or what that you’re targeting in your business, with what. I know, that’s pretty vague!

A niche is a more concentrated area of business – So you might have a very specific skill set, as opposed to more general Virtual Assistant services. For example, I’m a Pinterest Manager. The who or what are your clients, so maybe you only want to work with coaches, or you only want to work within the real estate industry.

Based on this there’s a number of options of how you can niche down;

I offer Virtual Assistant services to business coaches. – Your services are general, but specific to the who and the what.

I offer Pinterest Management to entrepreneurs. – Your services are specific, but open to the who and the what.

I offer Pinterest Management services to business coaches. – Your services are specific to the who and the what.

You see how these different statements narrow down in different ways?

You don’t need to niche down at all if you don’t want to, and actually when starting out it’s probably better not to. You can develop your niche in the future if you want to. It’ll definitely make it easier for you to find clients without niching down.

The benefit to niching is that it can allow you to be known as an expert in your field, which then allows you to charge higher prices for your services.

If this is something you’re unsure of, then I’d recommend not niching at this moment.

But still come up with your mission statement, for example, I’m a ………………………. for ………………………. and write this down.

5. Talk to people now about your Virtual Assistant business!

This is the best thing you can do.

I know this can be scary, but you need to get used to being pushed out of your comfort zone. 

The more people that know about your business, and the services you’re offering, the more likely you are to take on new clients.

So start telling people now about your business.
